Goodyear began mass-producing dedicated rubber heels and soles around 1905. During the early-to-mid 20th century, replacing worn-down shoe heels at local cobbler shops was standard practice. Goodyear cornered this market with their famous "Wingfoot" rubber heels, named after the winged foot of Mercury.
