The mythical flying horse first appeared on Mobil products around 1911, but it was officially adopted as the primary corporate trademark in 1931 when the Standard Oil Company of New York merged with the Vacuum Oil Company to form Socony-Vacuum.
Commercial illustrator, Robert "Rex" Elmer, gave flying horse was given its iconic, bold graphic shape to symbolize power, speed, and forward momentum. Huge versions like this one were mounted to the side of buildings so you could see Mobil Gas from miles away
