This artifact is a three-tier antique survivor's medal awarded for completing a bicycle "Century Run" in 1896.
During the late 19th-century "bicycle boom," local wheelmen clubs across the United States regularly hosted these high-endurance events. Rather than a standard speed race, a Century Run was a grueling test of stamina where cyclists had to complete a 100-mile course within a strict time limit—typically 14 to 16 hours. Riders who successfully endured the unpaved, often muddy roads of the era to reach the finish line were awarded highly detailed "Survivor Medals" to proudly pin to their club jerseys or lapels.
